The minimum age to apply for a Learner’s Permit in Tennessee is 15. Applicants under 18 must bring a parent or guardian to sign an affidavit and a financial responsibility form. The applicant must also show proof of school attendance/progress and pass both the written and vision tests. Permit holders may only drive while accompanied by a licensed driver age 21 or older in the front seat. They may not drive between the hours of 10 PM and 6 AM, and they must hold the permit for at least 180 days before being eligible for an Intermediate Restricted License.

The minimum age to apply for an Intermediate Restricted License is 16. Applicants must pass a road skills test and submit a form certifying they have at least 50 hours of driving experience, including at least 10 hours of night time driving. This form must be signed by a parent, guardian, or licensed instructor. Holders of an Intermediate Restricted License are not allowed to drive between the hours of 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM and are only allowed one passenger.  Insurance Tennessee now logo.

To be eligible for an Intermediate Unrestricted License, the applicant must be 17 years old and must have held an Intermediate Restricted License for at least one year. Like its name implies, the Unrestricted License imposes none of the above restrictions on the licensee, but it will state “Intermediate” to show that the holder is still under 18.

Drivers may be eligible for a Class D regular driver’s license when they reach age 18, or when they graduate high school or receive a GED, whichever happens sooner. This license will no longer state “Intermediate,” but it will indicate if the driver is under 21.
